Because gold is naturally a yellowish color, it must be mixed with another white metal to achieve it's silver tone. Most commonly used are nickel, manganese or palladium. Some people have allergies to nickel so white gold is frequently, but not always, plated with an extremely hard metal called rhodium. This rhodium plating may wear away over time but is easily reapplied by any jeweler.
